Cary is a village
in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population
was 15,531 at the 2000 census. A 2003 special census
put the village's population at 17,827.
As of 2007 it has grown significantly
because of the mass of new houses, due to avaricious
developers and individuals seeking a "small town
atmosphere" in the midst of urban sprawl.[citation
needed] The schools are now starting to deal with an
overcrowding problem.[citation needed]
William Cary founded the town
of Cary(named after Cary Greenwood, the "train
hero" and the great grandfather of Al Boher; who
the high school football field is named after) in the
year 1841 when he purchased 82 acres for $1.25 an acre.
Three years later in 1844 he bought another 80 acres.
The total number of acres in Cary came to 640 when his
purchases were totaled.[citation needed]
As of 2006, there are four public
elementary schools: Briargate, Maplewood, Three Oaks,
and Deerpath (Grades K-4); two private elementary schools,
one middle school: Prairie Hill (Grades 5-6), and one
junior high school: Cary Junior High School (Grades
7-8).
